Why we Speak English

Why We Speak English
by Lynn PedersenTheories of Rain)

Because when you say cup and spoon
your mouth moves the same way as your grandfather's
and his grandfather's before him.
It's Newton's first law: A person in motion
tends to stay in motion with the same speed
and direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force—
scarcity or greed.

Is there a word for greed in every language?
Because the ear first hearddyes furs pepper ginger tobacco cotton timber
silk freedom horizon
and the tongue wanted to taste all these fine things.
And when my son asks why his father speaks Danish
and he and I speak English and Carlos—at kindergarten—speaks Portuguese:

because Denmark is and has always been.
Our ancestors tracked north and Carlos'
tracked south. What's left in their wake
is language.

Because it comes down to want, to latitude and longitude as ways to measure
desire, invisible mover of ships—
great clockwise gyre of water in the sea—
like some amusement park ride where boats seem to sail
but run on tracks under the water.

Because to change course now would be like divertingthe Arno,
this centuries-long rut we've dug ourselves
into, and how would it be to wake up one morning
with bird oiseau or another word entirely?

Feeling bad blues

I haven't been feeling that great for the past couple of weeks. Nothing like a little illness to force introspection (is that even a word?...) I thought I was well on the road to recovery and had a little mishap today. Hopefully some sleep and antibiotics will do the trick.

Anyway, I did a couple of comfort things to make me feel better:

I signed up for a daily email from the Writers Almanac
I subscribed to several blogs.

I signed up for SparkPeople

Let me tell you a little more about Spark People:

A couple of people who started ebay decided to do something pretty awesome with some of the money they earned. The started an online community for people trying to loose weight and get healthy. Thisi s all for FREE! Check it out if you get the chance.

Beethoven's Immortal Beloved

I stumbled upon this letter, it has been such a long while since I read it:

Good morning, on July 7

Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, now and then joyfully, then sadly, waiting to learn whether or not fate will hear us - I can live only wholly with you or not at all - Yes, I am resolved to wander so long away from you until I can fly to your arms and say that I am really at home with you, and can send my soul enwrapped in you into the land of spirits - Yes, unhappily it must be so - You will be the more contained since you know my fidelity to you. No one else can ever possess my heart - never - never - Oh God, why must one be parted from one whom one so loves. And yet my life in V is now a wretched life - Your love makes me at once the happiest and the unhappiest of men - At my age I need a steady, quiet life - can that be so in our connection? My angel, I have just been told that the mailcoach goes every day - therefore I must close at once so that you may receive the letter at once - Be calm, only by a calm consideration of our existence can we achieve our purpose to live together - Be calm - love me - today - yesterday - what tearful longings for you - you - you - my life - my all - farewell. Oh continue to love me - never misjudge the most faithful heart of your
beloved.
ever thine
ever mine
ever ours

Charleston Part Deux

A view from the trees of the battery.

I took this picture of Hannah at lunchtime. We had the best waitress. She looked just like Ashley Judd.

The Jones go to Charleston

Oliver was going on his first big boy field trip--an overnight trip to Charleston, so naturally we decided to join him.

We received the royal treatment and everyone had a blast
We had lunch at the greatest little place in Mt. Pleasant called The Boulevard Diner. The food was fresh, hot and good!
We had to cross the Cooper River Bridge, the largest cable stay span bridge in North America. There is a faboulous bike and pedistrian lane. Next time we go, we are going to be sure to bring the bikes.
We met Oliver at the aquarium, where he and Hannah had the sweetest reunion.

Birthday Present

I was so happy to come home and find a suprise on my doorstep. One of my dearest friends in the whole wide world sent me a framed photograph she shot during a trip we had taken together to NYC. I immediately put it on my mantle and will cherish it always.

Bedtime Stories

Hannah was adamant that she take pictures of her bedtime story books. I told her I would post them for everyone to enjoy. She liked that idea... I think I see a digital camera in her future.
